Lower limb lymphedema: what are the causes?
Lymphedema and the Circulatory System: causes, diagnosis, and therapies
Lymphatic system disorders represent a delicate and frequent problem. LYMPHEDEMA (in-depth analysis with Dr. Bait) is characterized by a stagnation of lymph in the tissues.
Expert opinion:
"Lymphedema," explains Dr. Eleonora Rold, a physiotherapist, "frequently affects the limbs and is an indication of an impairment in the proper functioning of the lymphatic system."
The anatomy of the lymphatic system
Unlike blood, lymph is not pumped by the heart, but flows through vessels moved by muscle action. When this action is lacking, for example due to excessive immobility, lymph tends to stagnate, accumulating in the tissues.
Diagnosis and therapies
To diagnose lymphedema, tests such as lymphoscintigraphy or color Doppler ultrasound are used.
Manual lymph drainage is a primary therapy to reduce swelling. Bandaging and the use of graduated compression stockings prolong the beneficial effects of the massage. Regular use of 140-denier preventive stockings is recommended to constantly support the circulatory-lymphatic system.
