What happens after a caesarean section
What happens after a cesarean section?
From the operating table to returning home: a step-by-step guide to recovery and post-operative care.
1. The Recovery Room
Immediately after the operation, you will be monitored in an adjacent room. This is where the first skin-to-skin contact with your baby takes place, a fundamental moment supported by the midwife to initiate breastfeeding.
2. In the Ward: Check-ups
Vital Signs
Constant monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure a safe recovery.
Antithrombotic Prophylaxis
You will wear compression stockings to drastically reduce the risk of clots.
The Wound and Pain Management
The wound will be checked after 24 hours. At home, clean it only with plain water and pat gently. For pain, you will be prescribed medications compatible with breastfeeding.
3. Prevention and Clots
It is essential to get up and walk as soon as possible. The protocol usually includes injections of blood thinners and the constant use of graduated compression stockings day and night for the first 10-14 days.
Expert advice
Get a second pair of spare stockings. This allows you to maintain the preventive therapy consistently even while washing the others.
