Swollen feet, ankles and legs during pregnancy
Swollen feet and ankles: causes and remedies
It is natural to worry when your shoes start to feel tight. Find out why this happens and how to manage swelling during pregnancy.
Why do we experience swelling during pregnancy?
There are three main physiological reasons why blood tends to pool in the legs during these nine months:
Blood Volume
The body produces much more blood to support the baby's growth.
Uterine Pressure
The uterus puts pressure on the pelvic veins, hindering the return of blood to the heart.
Hormones
Changes make the vein walls more elastic and less efficient.
6 Tips to reduce swelling
- Avoid standing for too long.
- Keep your feet elevated whenever you can.
- Sleep on your left side to encourage circulation.
- Wear comfortable shoes and avoid tight straps.
- Limit salt, but drink plenty of water to flush out fluids.
- Practice regular exercise such as walking or swimming.
When to worry?
Call your doctor if you notice sudden swelling in your face or hands, if the swelling is asymmetrical (only one leg), or if it is accompanied by a severe headache and blurred vision.
