Restless legs syndrome
What is Restless Legs Syndrome?
Also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, it causes an irresistible urge to move your legs, especially at night.
Main symptoms
The primary symptom is an overwhelming urge to move the legs. These sensations worsen while resting (evening/night) and improve with movement:
Tip: Find out how a foot bath can improve nightly rest.
Causes and Diagnosis
There is no specific test. About 20% of pregnant women develop the syndrome in the third trimester, likely due to hormonal or metabolic changes.
Iron-deficiency anemia
Iron deficiency is common during pregnancy. A healthy diet and specific supplements can help manage symptoms.
Lifestyle
Moderate physical exercise (swimming, walking), leg massages, and reducing caffeine intake are essential for relieving discomfort.
Attention: RLS or a Blood Clot?
If you notice throbbing pain, visible swelling, or skin that is warm to the touch in only one leg, contact your doctor urgently. It could be Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
Wearing compression stockings during the day promotes tissue oxygenation and reduces venous stasis, significantly improving sleep quality.
